"Crosscurrents" (Original Art)
Original soft pastel on Canson Mi Tientes paper, 12 x 9 in.
Have you experienced contradiction - in thought, word, or action, within yourself or towards another?
St. Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, writes in the Letter to Romans 7:22-25: “For I delight in the law of God, in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin which dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!”
Many people are prone to take the above passage, descriptive of a type of crosscurrent, out of context, thinking they are doomed, or that something bad is in them. That isn’t true - the saint is simply talking about the human condition before it is redeemed. But evil is not a “thing” - it’s a deprivation of good, and God is our source and sustainer of goodness. Sin is “missing the mark” - aiming for something other than God. When we humans try to do things apart from God or do not consider Him, there is a lack that results from the sin of self-reliance…a sort of self-idolatry. And because God is our refuge (Psalm 46), any time we are in self-reliance (playing “god” in our imagination), we are not safe, and the waves of our minds will thrash in uncertainty and the attempt to “make sure” or prove a point to others or ourselves.
Let this painting serve as a reminder that God has created not only the ocean, but also the mind to know Him, the memory to remember His goodness, the heart to love Him, the will to choose Him and His way in recognition we are mere creatures, and the attention span to focus on Him. Let this remind you that the Lord who gave you life and oversees your heartbeat can reconcile the crosscurrents, and give us His peace.
